After World War I service with the King's Own Scottish Borderers〔(London Gazette )〕 and three years as a History Master at his old school he was ordained in 1922.〔Crockford's Clerical Directory1940-41 Oxford, OUP,1941〕 He was successively Chaplain, Vice-Principal then Principal of Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. In 1932 he was appointed the sixth Bishop of Jerusalem,〔(Diocesan web-site )〕 a post he held for 20 years.
